Brexit Borders: Evolving Irish Writing with James Joyce and WB Yeats

Sunday 23rd | 4:30PM

In 2018, The Society of Authors and The Irish Writers' Union released a joint statement warning of the impact a no-deal Brexit would have on the publishing and literary relationship between the two countries. The statement notes the ‘close trading relationship’ between Ireland and the UK and that ‘books are able to flow freely from one country to the other.’ The future of this symbiotic relationship is uncertain in the face of Brexit.

Appearing alongside WB Yeats, both undoubtedly political writers, interested in Ireland’s evolution as an independent state and the nation’s relationship with its closest geographical neighbour, our guests have somehow caught up with all the politics they missed out on in the afterlife. In this one-off unmissable event, ClassiCon 2019 brings visitors a conversation with two of Ireland’s most iconic writers.

'I've put in so many enigmas and puzzles that it will keep the professors busy for centuries arguing over what I meant, and that's the only way of insuring one's immortality.'

- Joyce on his novel Ulysses

Following the events of one single day in Dublin, the 16th June 1904, and what happens to the characters Stephen Dedalus, Leopold Bloom and his wife Molly, Ulysses is a monument to the human condition. It has survived censorship, controversy and legal action, and even been deemed blasphemous, but remains an undisputed modernist classic: ceaselessly inventive, garrulous, funny, sorrowful, vulgar, lyrical and ultimately redemptive. It confirms Joyce's belief that literature 'is the eternal affirmation of the spirit of man'.
